The Upside to Elderly Home Care

The upside to elderly home care may surprise you. I know it did me. When I first ventured down the elderly home care path, I found it
to be challenging, sometimes exasperating and oftentimes so physically and mentally exhausting that I wasn’t sure how I could go on providing elderly home care. I discovered that elderly home care was similar to when I brought home my first baby, but quite different since this time those relying on me had a lot more wisdom under their belt than I did and had loved and nurtured me my whole life. They were hesitant to take up anymore of my time than necessary even though they knew they were in need of my elderly home care help. It took me a while, but I convinced them that providing elderly home care was something I wanted to do.
This upside to elderly home care may be unexpected in light of today’s news that often points to data concerning caregiver stress and article after article illustrating the financial challenges those offering elderly home care may have to deal with. There are even claims that those offering elderly home care to patients with dementia are treated more often in emergency rooms and may be more susceptible to depression. These are all valid challenges that must be negotiated, but there are more issues that one should look at when preparing to offer elderly home care.
I’ve discussed the situation with others who are in the midst of providing elderly home care and I believe there is more to the elderly home care picture than the downside.  Despite the negative data on caregivers gathered in some spots, I believe providing elderly home care can also be good for you. If you still have children at home, they often benefit greatly from their grandparent’s unconditional love and wisdom. My children have lived with their grandparents for the last ten years and I know that their love and support helped the boys to become the wonderful, caring men that they are today. I have learned to prioritize my life and how to say no even to the experts when I need to. I’ve learned to take one step at a time and have faced challenges and become an advocate for my family. As I see it, the upside to providing elderly home care is the fact that it strengthens the caregiver and the family in ways that will be carried on for generations to come. It can certainly challenge us to points we never imagined we could handle, but I believe it is also an opportunity to build on our strengths, unconditional love and resiliency.

Mostly that’ s because most people don’ t realize how many skills they do have. If you have office skills, for example, you may be able to find work as a virtual assistant. If you have transportation you might try mystery shopping , although it can.
reply to this commentI never thought I will agree with this opinion, but you know… I agree partially now.
reply to this commenti AM A HOME CARE RN. I LOVE WHAT I DO .THERE ARE SO MANY BENEFITS TO ELDER HOME CARE. FAMILY TIME, INDEPENDENCE, INCREASED SELF ESTEEM, EMPOWERMENT. YOU JUST NEED TO LISTEN TO WHAT THESE WISE PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY AND GUIDE THEM TO A SAFE HOME ENVIORMENT. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO REMEBER THEY HAVE A MIND OF THERE OWN., DONT MAKE DECISIONS FOR THME BUT WITH THEM, EXCEPT IN THE CASE OF CONFUSION ETC.
reply to this commentThanks for stopping by. I am a big fan of chiropractic and have taken my parents to a Chiropractor who utilizes the non-activator method. One has osteoarthritis and is able to do this method, but our family Dr. has told him that regular chiropractic care might be trickier due to his condition. What do you think?
reply to this commentThe health of the elderly is often overlooked and needs to be reviewed.

I think the upside can be the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping someone who has cared for you or other in the family. Our elders deserve our service and respect, and we as caregiver provide it. That's my favorite upside.
reply to this commentHi, Congratulations to the site owner for this marvelous work you’ve done. It has lots of useful and interesting data.
reply to this commentThank you for this uplifting article Mary, I certainly agree that Homecare has a number of benefits. My family cared for my grandfather throughout the 6 years that he suffered from Alzheimers and while it was difficult at times, there were other times where it was just good to have both my grandparents around and it definitely brought my family closer together, & for that I am grateful. Now I do work for Carebuzz, a company that provides information about in-home care for aging seniors. If you have time and are interested please check out one of our blogs for helpful tips and resources for caring for an aging loved one. Hope you find it helpful!

reply to this commentI’m the Director of a home care agency and could not agree more! There are great rewards for those tackling the challenges of family caregiving. Prudent use of an in home caregiver that enables the family caregiver to have a break for a few hours, or a vacation is an important tool to combat the stress. Whether that respite caregiver is a friend, family member, or from a trusted home care agency, they are a vital component to preserving the family caregiver’s continued success.

reply to this commentA word to the wise…don’t plan on providing care at home unless everyone in the family is in agreement. Never ever surprise a spouse with this kind of plan or you will be setting yourself, and your parent, for much unpleasantness.
reply to this commentHome Care can be an uplifting experience, not only for the senior being cared for, but for the caregiver as well. From what I’ve seen, Home Care Agencies can provide (fully vetted) loving care for elders who prefer to stay in their homes and live their lives with dignity in comfortable surroundings. Caregivers don’t necessarily need a lot of work experience, so it is a great fulfilling work for someone who is new or returning to the work force. Totally win-win. However, you need to pick the right Home Care Agency. A great online site can be found at http://www.Caregiverlist.com. They provide a great many tools to help in the Home Care arena, including a place to post your resume for caregiving jobs in your area.
reply to this commentI have a home health care agency located in Tacoma, Wa. My business is new and I am open to all opionions. I would like some advise on running a successful caregiving business. I love the caregiving business. I need help with marketing/advertisement and any other advise you feel that would assist me.
reply to this commentIt is hard enough to care for your parents without a full time job. For those of us who feel like we are constantly in the office, home care can be a true blessing. However, like with anything important, proper measures and time must be spent researching various home care agencies to find which one works for you.
reply to this commentI am home caring for my 4th Alzheimer’s relative, my husband, and would not have it any other way. My last blog entry, discusses why I have made this decision and why I think it is a decision that should only be made by me and my family.
reply to this commentI have a question. My husband had parkinson’s and dementia. He fell and broke his hip during the night; he has now had a partial hip replacement and is doing good in rehab. My question is how can I keep him safe in bed at night? He climbed over the bed rail in the hospital and is in a veiled bed in rehab.
reply to this commentYour Message@Sue Kolitz:
reply to this commentI’d ask them in rehab if the physical therapist might not prescribe a similar veiled bed for at home?
My staff and I provide at home care to the aging. While it poses some difficulties for family, keeping the aging in thier homes is a financially sound option. More importantly, senior citizens have a great deal to offer to those willing to listen. Aging adults are a valuable part of our community and their contributions need to be recognized.
reply to this commentWhat a great website you have provided here. There are some really great resources out there.
I was in contact with Dr. James Watzke, a gerontologist and Christine Flegal, a gerontologist in the Living Laboratory at the B.C. Institute of Technology who have assembled a Guide both for you as the aging Boomer but for you to initiate the conversations with Mom and Dad while you are home over the holidays.

reply to this commentSince becoming involved with Seniors Helping Seniors, I have met the most wonderful people. We match seniors that want to help with seniors that need help. Since they are peers, the relationships evolve over memories and things in common. Being a caregiver is truly “away to give… and to receive…”
