Living in the future.

Blog by Joy Loverde

Future I’ve had a heck of a week. I’ve been struggling with the death of people around me. People I love dearly. People I can’t imagine living without. Fact is they did not die. They are alive and well. It’s me projecting into the future and making myself feel sick to my stomach.

Do you ever do that? When you are with someone you love like your spouse, partner, parent, child, friend, do you ever say to yourself, “I never want to forget this perfect and happy moment.” Do you ever think about them dying and leaving you?

From time to time, I go through days where thoughts about my loved one’s deaths are front and center. And then just as quickly as these thoughts overwhelm me, they dissipate into thin air and I go back to living in the present moment once again.

I just got off the phone with my very wise friend, Martin Bayne. Some of you regular readers of my blogs know of Martin through my writings over the years. He is the man behind, The Voice of Aging Boomers  I told him about my rough week and his sage advice was this…

Go get some sleep. “Let God speak to you and allow your spirituality to regenerate.” His advice could not be more perfect. I’ve had too many hours awake with my brain churning and churning and projecting. Now I truly understand how all this thinking and living in my head can lead to impaired mental health.

Okay, Marty, I’m off to dreamland. Goodnight moon.
