Dementia in the Elderly


Dementia is a condition which mostly affects the elderly people. Sometimes it occurs in the youngsters as well. Here, the sufferer develops problems in the social or intellectual abilities which can be troublesome in carrying out routine duties. The common symptoms of this condition irrespective of the type of dementia are forgetfulness, loss of memory, being unable to learn or recollect things that have been learnt, inability in planning and keeping things in an organized way, difficulty in communication, losing control on motor skills and co-ordination of movements.

Some of the other traits include loss of rationalization, inappropriate behavioral traits or change in the individual's personality. Sometimes paranoia, immobility, agitation, incontinence, depression or hallucinations may also accompany these symptoms. The symptoms becomes apparent and can be inferred when the condition progresses to a worse stage.

The causes for this condition may be either reversible or irreversible. Some of the causes in the former category include problems in immunity, infections, deficiency in nutrition, tumor of the brain, poisoning, disorder in the endocrine system, side effects of certain medications, metabolic disorders or anoxia. The causes coming under the irreversible category include Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia; pick disease, Huntington disease and so on.

Drugs like Cholinesterase inhibitor or Memantine can be prescribed. Dementia can be prevented by solving puzzles, painting, drawing or involving in any activity which can keep the mind active. One must ensure presence of adequate physical and social activity, maintain a healthy diet, maintain cholesterol within permissible limits, keep a check on the blood sugar, and ensure being vaccinated as required.
