I really enjoy the articles on this blog. After caring for my great grandfather for over a year I built the site AlzMall.com. I am really looking for those who are passionate about Alzheimer's care to contribute articles, stories, or just general information to my site.

Thinking about this disease as a disability instead of a problem may be an easier way for caregivers to maintain compassion (and patience). As my dad swings from what I would consider "normal" for him to the extreme of irrational I try to tell myself its just the disease--I think a better way of thinking will be "what can I do right now to assist him in his disability?" (am I using the right words, is my voice loud enough, am I talking to fast, am I assuming he understands, etc.)

Ryan Malone's interview with Dr. Richard Taylor, a former psychologist who has early stage Alzheimer's disease, and the author of "Alzheimer's From The Inside Out," had a profound effect on the way I think about Alzheimer's. To paraphrase Dr. Taylor: "Our culture sees people who have dementia as being defective. We may not be all here the way we were yesterday, but we’re here today. It’s just that some of our cognitive functions are slipping." In other words, people with any form of dementia have a disability ... specifically a cognitive disability ... and just like other people who have a physical disability, some are more disabled than others.
